Brewers Cracking Under The Pressure
CC Sabathia - no wait… Prince Fielder - that was Fielder, right? Man, the Brewers really have a lot of big dudes on their team - sometimes it can be hard to tell them apart. Anyway - I digress.
Prince Fielder freaked out the other day on Manny Para after the pitcher was removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning of a 6-3 loss Monday. No word on the source of the fight - though Para’s performance in the game sucked (kind of like the Brewers lately), so that’s my guess. A little roid rage against a pitcher that caused the Brewers to lose the seventh out of nine games.
Fielder had this to say:
“It’s not like we hate each other,” Fielder said. “I don’t. It’s just a little disagreement. I apologize for the way it went down, but I don’t apologize for the passion and intensity. I definitely could have handled it a little better, but just at that moment, that’s how it went down. I can’t take it back. The way I handled it probably could have been dealt with better.”
Fielder has since apologized.
But this opens up a few questions about the Brewers, and their maturity level.
They are now only barely in the lead for the NL wild card, and they were viewed as a virtual lock for the playoffs once they acquired CC Sabathia. Since then, for the first time since 1982, the Brewers have lived with actual expectations. How are they handling that?
Not well apparently.
Things like this can either spark a team, or they can destroy it. Given how weak the National League is, I’m betting they will end up in the playoffs, but its a 50/50 bet at this point.
