Georgia One Victory Away

Submitted by Sports Wire Staff on Wednesday, 25 June 2008No Comment

The University of Georgia scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally past Fresno State 7-6 and move within a victory of its second College World Series baseball title.

Gordon Beckham hit a two-run home run off Fresno State closer Brandon Burke to pull Georgia within 6-5 in the eighth inning. Fresno State’s Matt Cerione doubled in the tying run three batters later and then scored the go-ahead run on a double by Joey Lewis at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska.

Georgia closer Joshua Fields retired Fresno State in order in the ninth inning to record his 18th save of the season and tie for the national lead. Georgia leads the best-of-three championship series 1-0 and can win the national title with a victory tomorrow.

“We never think we’re out of it and we showed it tonight,” Beckham, who has 27 homers this season, said in a televised interview with ESPN. “A lot of people were saying we were done, but we just wanted to get some runners on base and see what happens.”
