Stamkos Taken First in NHL Draft
The Tampa Bay Lightning made the predictable move on Friday, selecting Steven Stamkos of the Ontario Hockey League’s Sarnia Sting with the first overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft at Scotiabank Place.
The other NHL teams, however, were anything but predictable as they came together to complete 13 trades during the first day of the two-day event.
Stamkos is the third player drafted first overall in franchise history. Tampa Bay picked defenseman Roman Hamrlik first in 1992 and selected Vincent Lecavalier with the top pick in 1998.
